EMC Corp. announced yesterday its desire to buy Data Domain, a data backup company, for $30 a share, or roughly $1.8 billion in cash.

The real deal is for de-duplication and effective replacement of tape by drives (Cloud Storage?) as enterprise backup. Control the TBytes of backup with removal of old duplicated files. It's worth a lot of money . . .

An interesting problem for the rapidly growing opportunity in URL shortners such as the original tinyURL and now Bit.ly. Brief communications tied to site interconnection are beginning to put stress on the original URL system which was a kluge to begin with although a brilliant one.
